One of the world’s most invasive species of spider, known to cause serious infections and resistant to some antibiotics, has now officially called NZ home.

The Noble False Widow Spider shares a close resemblance to the Black Widow.

Since the initial sighting in Porirua last year, the species has been confirmed in Christchurch, Nelson, Northland and Waikato.

Massey University evolutionary ecologist Steven Trewick said The Noble False Widow was already thriving in backyards, favouring gardens, outdoor furniture and the undersides of plant pots.

“Although considered less dangerous than Black Widows, the venom of Steatoda Nobilis contains similar toxins”

Trewick said the main concern was the venom’s antibiotic-resistant properties.

“Infections resulting from bites don’t always respond to treatment, and that’s a significant medical concern.”

The spider is not aggressive but would bite if provoked.

Trewick mentioned that not all environments around the country would allow the spiders to flourish.

“Climate conditions play a big role for cold-blooded creatures like spiders, but as we’ve found out, the noble false widow has found New Zealand’s cities quite comfortable.”

It is yet to be seen how the species will impact native wildlife.
